Many foods contain protein, with questions being asked as to whether it is the right way to lose weight or not, and here we look at the ins and outs of the protein diet.
What is the protein diet?
The protein diet is, as it says, one that concentrates on protein rich foods and does away with carbohydrates.
There is a line of thinking that carbohydrates can cause excessive blood sugar fluctuations, and increase the fat content as a result.
A protein diet would consist of the following:
Breakfast of eggs and bacon, with no bread involved as this is a high in carbohydrates.
Lunch of a burger, without the bun, and salad side.
Dinner of a high protein meat product, with salad side again.
In other words, the protein diet involves as much food as you wish, as long as the carbohydrates and sugars are avoided at all costs. Starch is also a no go area, too.
Does it work?
Many swear by the protein diet, insisting that it allows them to eat what they want without putting on weight, and can assist weight loss with very rapid results.
This is true in many cases, although it has been pointed out that much of the weight loss is thanks to the body not storing water, a necessary factor for good health, and that if the dieter is to start taking carbohydrates on board again the weight would quickly return.
Further down sides of the protein diet can be the intake of excess cholesterol and calories, this can be unhealthy in a number of ways.
The protein diet is suggested by many, and tested by others, but it is up to you to decide whether it is, or is not, for you.
